Series: Slave to Fashion

Artist: Elka M. Stevens

Date: 2018

Media: Paper under acrylic

Dimensions: 40" w x 30" h

Description: "Angelina Brookes - Dashiki Pt. 2" is a graphic representation of a dashiki, a garment that reached peak popularity during the US Civil Rights Movement in the late 1960s and early 1970s for African Americans. It borrows Visco's traditional dashiki motif, but instead of flowers as its primary focus, it features well-placed bodies of Africans from the British stowage vessel, the Brookes, which transported enslaved Africans to the Caribbean. And other motifs associated with US enslavement. The artist created this piece as a preview of the forthcoming collection, using the original 2017 "Angelina Brookes" textile, part of the artist's practice of transforming two-dimensional archival documents into displayable, and even wearable, three-dimensional fiber artworks.
