Undergraduate Jazz Voice Audition Requirements
The deadlines for receipt of all audition materials, including recordings and a completed audition form, are:
November 1, 2022 – for admission in Spring 2023
November 15, 2022 – for Early Decision/Early Action for admission in Fall 2023
March 2, 2023 – for Regular Decision for admission in Fall 2023

Once you have recorded your audition and uploaded it to a private YouTube channel,
- Download a computer-fillable audition form and complete the appropriate sections;
- Open a new email, address it to your performance area coordinator, and attach the audition form;
- Place the link to your recorded audition materials in the body of the email; and
- Send the email to your performance area coordinator by the applicable audition deadline.
Undergraduate Jazz Voice Audition Requirements
For jazz voice, we are still holding our auditions via video so that the auditioner may sing without a mask. However, by special request, we can arrange a live audition for any prospective student who would prefer to audition in person, but masks will be required, which can muffle the voice.
Applicants wishing to be admitted to freshman classification as majors in Jazz Studies must demonstrate the following:
- Three (3) selections in contrasting jazz styles and tempos (e.g., med. swing, fast swing, blues, ballad, bossa nova, samba,
jazz waltz etc.).
- The addition of improvisation (scat singing) encouraged for at least one tune.
For live auditions, bring sheet music or lead sheets in the key in which you sing. You may bring your own accompanist, or one will be provided.
For video auditions, you may use a live accompanist or backing tracks (karaoke tracks, band-in-a-box, iReal book, Aebersold backings, Hal Leonard backing, etc...)
Please upload video(s) to an unpublished YouTube channel and send the links to Prof. Connaitre Miller at conmiller@howard.edu.
Before sending videos, please check the following:
- Balance is good between vocals and backing track or accompanist - we need to hear your voice clearly.
- The YouTube videos are marked unpublished, but that anyone with the link may view.
- Alternatively, you may upload to a google drive folder - but be sure to give access to conmiller@howard.edu or make the file
"unrestricted" (anyone with the link can view)
An interview will follow the audition—either immediately after a live audition, or by Zoom or telephone call at a future scheduled time for a recorded audition.
