New Faculty, Staff: Music & Dean's Office

Dear Howard University Fine Arts Community,

On behalf of the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts, we congratulate Dr. Benita L. Gladney and Mrs. Tammy McCants on their recent appointment effective September 2022. Dr. Gladney will serve as Assistant Chair for the Department of Music and Mrs. McCants is our new Director of Enrollment and Academic Services.

We are pleased that Dr. Gladney and Mrs. McCants have taken on these new positions. We are excited to welcome them into their new leadership roles that are critical to the continued evolution of the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts during the coming months and years.

Dr. Benita L. Gladney is an Associate Professor and the Coordinator of Music Education at Howard University. She teaches undergraduate courses such as Contemporary Trends in Music Education, Music in the Elementary Schools, Secondary Methods, Instrumental Conducting, Instrumental Survey, Brass Methods, and Teaching and Supervising Instrumental Music. Graduate courses include Foundations of Music Education, Administration and Supervision of Music Education and Graduate Research in Music Education. She is the Supervising Teacher for student teachers in the field. Gladney’s primary research interests include music teacher certification exams; music technology in ensembles; teacher effectiveness; and jazz education.

Tammy McCants has worked in higher education over two decades in admission, marketing, and recruitment roles. Most recently, she proudly served as the Associate Director of Admission at Howard University. The contributions to her profession that she is most proud of have been increasing enrollment in undergraduate and graduate programs through implementing integrated marketing communication plans and providing higher education consultancy to diverse student populations. She loves helping people achieve their educational goals and gets a great sense of fulfillment from doing so. She holds an Associate in Applied Science in Business Technology and a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing from the University of the District of Columbia; and a Master of Science in Administration in Organizational Development from Trinity University, a certificate in College Admissions from Harvard University Summer Institute, and is an alumnae of the College Board Enrollment Leadership Academy.

We look forward to their contributions and service to the students, faculty and staff of the College of Fine Arts and the larger Howard University and general public. Welcome!
