New Staff: Gallery of Art

Dear Howard University Fine Arts Community,

On behalf of the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts, we congratulate Prof. Kathryn Coney-Ali and Dr. Raul Moarquech Ferrera-Balanquet on their recent appointments effective August 2022. Prof. Coney-Ali and Dr. Ferrera-Balanquet will serve as Co-Executive Directors for the Gallery of Art.

We are pleased that Prof. Coney-Ali and Dr. Ferrera-Balanquet have taken on these new roles. Each of them brings years of experience in their respective positions and will play critical leadership roles in the continued evolution of the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts during the coming months and years. Prof. Coney-Ali will manage our extensive Collections while Dr. Ferrera-Balanquet will focus on Exhibitions.

K.E. Coney-Ali is a cultural historian and educator who specializes in African and Diaspora Studies. Coney-Ali has a B.F.A. in Art Management with a minor in Painting and M.A. in Art History in Visual Culture as well as graduate certificate in International Studies from Howard University. Additionally, she has a professional studies certificate in Preservation Management from Rutgers University and is currently completing her doctoral studies at Howard University. As an educator, Coney-Ali serves as a lecturer of African art history and graduate thesis studies in the Department of Art at Howard University. Her professional work experience in the cultural arts field runs the gamut, from communications at the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to museum registration and collection management at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian and Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History of Culture, and interim directorship at Howard University Gallery of Art.

Ferrera-Balanquet is an Indigenous Kairibe Africana Arab Caribbean interdisciplinary artist, writer, curator, Fulbright scholar, and community activist born in Havana, Cuba. He holds a Ph.D. from Duke University and an MFA from the University of Iowa. A founder member of Latino Midwest Video Collective, Laboratorio Cartodigital, and the collective Afroyucatecxs. A prominent artist from the Mariel Generation, he is the author of Aestesis Decolonial Transmoderna Latinx_MX (2019), FONCA- Instituto Kanankil A.C.; editor of the anthology Andar ErĂ³tico Decolonial (2015), Ediciones del Signo, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
