Ntozake Shange’s choreopoem, for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf, remains one of the most iconic performance pieces to date. Our workshop production joins a lineage of theaters—from community theaters and universities to regional theaters and the recent Broadway revival in 2022—bringing this timeless play to diverse audiences. A series of twenty poems and monologues, for colored girl who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf depicts the varied experiences of African American girl/womanhood. Furthermore, the play represents sisterhood, demonstrating that this radical creative text is not only enduring but essential during these uncertain times.
