The Department of Theatre Arts at Howard University (www.finearts.howard.edu) is seeking energetic, vibrant, and engaging candidates with a desire to grow with us for the position of Professor in the nationally renowned Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) Musical Theatre program. This is a full-time, tenured appointment beginning for academic year (AY) 2025-26. The position will work with the faculty of the Musical Theatre Program, and faculty in the other five departmental concentrations, to continue to build on the Program's many strengths for the training of aesthetic cultural activists in the broad fields of Theatre Arts.

We seek an artist/educator with equal experience in musical theatre and incorporating inclusive and forward moving andragogies in our classrooms.
The Musical Theatre area of concentration produces professional, artist/scholars who have the ability to excel on any theatrical stage, including, but not limited to, Broadway, Off-Broadway, touring, regional, international, cabaret and concert, both major and minor, commercial and not-for-profit. The program asserts that beginning with intense self-discovery and exploration, matched with dedicated focus on foundational technique, followed by an unyielding diligence towards artistic and scholarly excellence, produces creative, high-quality artists. The program works to facilitate not just the creation of performers who are highly skilled technicians of singing, dancing and acting but passionate artists with a deep respect for the craft who use musical theatre to communicate with audiences about our shared human condition.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in both performance and musical theatre performance/directing, who can teach a range of performance and musical theatre courses, and possess who possesses a passion for working collaboratively. This person will direct the Musical Theatre program and will continue to strengthen the major. Significant professional and teaching experience and a commitment to working in theatre, music, and dance are essential.
Duties primarily include:
Administrative duties – the capacity to serve as Area Coordinator responsible for area: curriculum assessment and development; recommend course scheduling; academic advisement; student records maintenance; on-going academic performance assessment for the concentration; student academic advisement; season planning recommendations, including master-class recommendations; helping students with problems associated with registration, classes, rehearsals and performances; acting as spokesperson for the area; coordinating faculty around juries and other area-wide student assessments; consulting with faculty members about their ideas and suggesting solutions for area issues; student recruitment; student matriculation; area faculty management; and area faculty recruitment recommendations.
Instructional duties – teaching courses in the musical theatre and other relevant areas within the Department of Theatre Arts with a minimum/maximum workload of 15/18 credit hours per academic year.
Research Scholarship and Creative duties – pursuing professional growth through funded research, scholarly writing, advanced study and/or original creative production on-campus appropriate to the discipline of musical theatre.
Departmental, College and University Service duties – serving on departmental, college and university wide committees for the governance of departmental, college and university shared governance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- MFA in Musical Theatre or related discipline completed by date of employment
- At least 6 years teaching experience and administrative leadership at the university/college level
- Experience as a professional musical theatre performer, director and/or choreographer contracted to work for major national - or International – theatre companies, on the professional concert stage, and/or for Broadway theatre productions

Summary of position: The Costume Shop Manager has responsibility for oversight and management of all support for the operation of the Costume Shop for performances by the Department of Theatre Arts. This includes working with Theatre faculty, Guest Artists, and students to provide costume and staffing support for productions as well as training and hiring of student workers for costume construction and wardrobe management.
- The Costume Shop Manager is responsible for oversight and maintenance of equipment and inventory of the Costume Shop, coordination of stock items, and rentals.
- The Costume Shop Manager is expected to construct costumes for the Theatre program as needed, supervise the rental, construction, and shopping for costumes; the acquisition of needed materials and stock for shop operations; and any necessary alterations for productions by the Theatre Program in collaboration with the faculty, Guest Artists, or student designers.
- Additionally, this position will provide wardrobe management for specific departmental Dance productions.
- The Costume Shop Manager position requires clarity and commitment to the mission of the Department of Theatre Arts, and to the support of students and faculty in this work.
- Specifically, this requires a balancing of educational and professional artistic standards of excellence and clarity about the distinctions and the overlapping practices of academic and professional performing arts settings.
- The position schedule requires schedule flexibility in order to meet the needs of the programs for academic and performance activities in the evenings and weekends.
Duties primarily include:
- Consult with the Department Chairperson regarding the performance calendar, schedule for work, and annual budget for the costume shop operation.
- Availability for consultations with Guest/student designers, directors, choreographers, and/or Theatre Arts staff concerning needs for specific performances.
- In close collaboration with Guest designers and student designers, supervise costume construction, purchase and alteration, or supervise and coordinate the costume production for all Theater and Dance productions.
- Hiring, training and supervision of student workers in support of costume construction, alterations, maintenance and wardrobe crews for all Theatre, and Dance productions.
- General oversight of equipment and supplies in the costume shop.
- Maintain regular office hours for the costume shop operation.
- In consultation with the Chair of the Department of Theatre Arts, develop and communicate general guidelines for shop operation to designers, and directors.
- Design opportunities possible with additional compensation.
Instructional duties – This position includes duties associated with the supervision of undergraduate students in Costumes.
Production duties – This position includes duties associated with the productions of the Department of Theatre Arts relative to the theatrical design of shows. Designing productions of plays and musicals, mentoring of student leaders in the areas of theatrical design, recommending production staff, etc., are some of the duties included therein.
Authority and Accountability – The position reports to the Chair of the Department of Theatre Arts. The position is responsible for monitoring the supervision of student workers.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master or equivalent professional experience. In addition to the above, two to three years' professional experience. Working knowledge of all aspects of costume design and construction for theater and dance, required. Strong organizational and communication skills. Must possess management and administrative skills as well as the maturity to supervise student workers; to efficiently schedule student staffing for the shop and events, and to effectively administer policies. Competence in necessary computer programs related to design. Must be able to work independently, but also enjoy contributing to a teamwork situation. Must be able to work with diverse personalities and constituencies. Must be able to handle multiple tasks, to work under deadlines, and to prioritize workload.

JOB PURPOSE:
The Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts seeks a Director of Marketing and Communications to join our team. The successful candidate plans, executes, and evaluates a comprehensive marketing communications strategy and implements communications from the College to its faculty, staff, students, alumni and the general public. This position works collaboratively with members of the Office of Development and Alumni Relations, Office of University Communications, and the College of Fine Arts to ensure consistency of messaging and promotes the overall institutional goals related to communications and marketing, engagement, and philanthropy.
SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:
Responsible for orienting and training others, and assigning and reviewing their work. May also be responsible for acting in a “lead” or “senior” capacity over other positions performing essentially the same work, or related technical tasks and reporting to a higher level on a formal basis.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
Internal contacts include administrators, faculty, students and staff of the department and the University at large. External contacts include consultants, vendors, representatives from other colleges and universities, visitors and the general public.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy that promotes the College’s academic programs, research, initiatives, and events to internal and external stakeholders.
Manage and oversee all communication channels, including website, social media, email marketing, print materials, and media relations in coordination with Office of University Communications.
Work collaboratively with other departments/units to develop content for a variety of communication materials, including press releases, newsletters, brochures, speeches, and presentations.
Ensure consistency and accuracy of messaging, key College priorities and strategies across all marketing and communications channels and materials.
Serve as managing editor of the College of Fine Arts e-newsletter publication and coordinates content and tone.
With specific counsel from the Office of University Communications, ensure all marketing campaigns offer major online components that include: Digital Email Campaigns, Websites and Social Media.
Serve as a conduit for Development and Alumni Relations and University Communications to develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, alumni, donors, community partners, and media outlets.
Strategize, write, edit, and manage creative collaborations, press releases, announcements, etc., for events and programmatic activity for the College and student marketing.
Manage print projects and marketing campaigns for events and programs.
Help generate ideas and execution for potential video conception and production.
Identify other ways to market the College’s message and campaigns.
Monitor and analyze media coverage and trends to identify opportunities and challenges for the College.
Strategize and oversee all College promotional products in coordination with University branding.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Advanced knowledge of office and administrative practices and principles.

Skill in the operation of computers and understanding of web-based technologies, including basic knowledge of HTML, design applications such as Photoshop and InDesign, and proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite of products; and, Adobe, Canva, other design software.
Knowledge and skill in accounting and budgeting procedures and techniques.

Ability to exercise discretion and ensure a high-level of confidentiality.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with a diverse population; excellent organization, project management and proofreading skills.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, development or related field.
5 – 7 years of marketing, communications, journalism, alumni relations, development, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Occasional travel: some evening and weekend work required.
