Assistant Professor of Graphic Design (Tenure-Track)
The Department of Art in the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts at Howard University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Graphic Design. This is a full-time, tenure-track appointment beginning for academic year (AY) 2026-27. We seek outstanding applicants with a demonstrated track record of excellence in creative practice, research and teaching. Candidates should have a thorough understanding of the implications of design practice in relation to broader social, cultural, economic, scientific, and technological issues; have the ability to inspire students and to help them develop skills necessary for the translation of meaningful ideas into innovative and creative solutions for real-world problems. Candidates should also be able to assist with the development and support of the program's relationships with external partners.
The Department of Art invites applicants with expertise in one or more of the following design areas: print layout, typography, web design, multimedia, motion graphics, illustration, digital photography, interactive/computational media design, augmented/virtual/mixed reality design, interaction design, data visualization, and/or interactive media arts. Candidates should understand emerging media and collaborate with faculty across disciplines. An interest in interdisciplinary and intermedia practice is preferred, as is experience and commitment to working with diverse student populations in a culturally rich work and educational environment.
The Department of Art currently consists of faculty members teaching, practicing, and conducting research in Graphic and Information Design, Fashion Design, Electronic Studio, Interior Design, Art History, Photography, Painting, and Ceramics. The Department offers both BFA and MFA degrees. It is the goal of the department that graduates in graphic design become innovative artists who are technically and conceptually prepared for a lifelong career in the field.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- MFA or other terminal degree required in design by the start date of the appointment
- At least two years of higher education level teaching preferred;
- Professional experience commensurate with the rank of assistant professor: demonstrate a national or international record of excellence in creative practice
- Evidence of innovative research, substantive scholarship, and effective teaching
- Familiarity with the commercial and business aspects of the field
- Candidates will have experience developing new courses that engage with contemporary practices, techniques, and issues in the field of Graphic Design.
- Candidates will have a well-developed research practice that informs and advances current trends in the field through creative production, experimentation, collaboration, exhibition and publication.
- Candidates will possess excellent technical skills and an in-depth knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite, especially Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, and InDesign. Candidates will also be well-versed with current web and app design practices, CMS, and experience working in multiple computer platforms and system configurations.
- Candidates will demonstrate effective communication skills: be able to communicate with students from diverse backgrounds; and demonstrate an eagerness to teach in, and advance, the graphic design concentration.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Teach undergraduate and graduate students in various areas of graphic design: including digital media arts, using traditional and digital means.
- Mentor students within the context of an interdisciplinary art and design program.
- Actively participate in undergraduate and graduate level curriculum development.
- Maintain an outstanding record of teaching, service, and art and design production and research practices.
- Share responsibility for all aspects of the graphic design program and serve on committees at the department, school, college, and university level.
- Facilitate student involvement in trade and professional bodies: by leading field trips, as well as advising local design clubs on campus.
- Work with students to produce portfolios of work that reflects a high degree of knowledge in the field.

Fine Arts Workshop Technician
The Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts, Department of Art is seeking a Fine Arts Workshop Technician that will work in a university context with specialist knowledge, skills and experience of working with particular materials such as paint, wood, metal, textiles, ceramics, or audio-visual. They will work with a range of specialities such as: painting, fashion, ceramics and will be based within a central workshop at the university where they will work with students from across a range of arts disciplines. This is a full-time salaried position.
A large part of the role will be student facing, where they will responsible for demonstrating the use of specialist tools, software, techniques and equipment to the students. Other responsibilities of the role include: looking after workshop equipment; overseeing health and safety in workshop areas; keeping a record of stock and ordering new materials when needed; building, repairing and maintaining studio and exhibition spaces; and assisting with the installation of student and faculty exhibitions.
Scope:
There are six subject/programmatic areas that will access the Fine Arts Workshop and its Technician: These are Painting; Photography; Sculpture; Ceramics; Communication Design; Fashion Design; and Interior Design. The student body comprises of undergraduate [BFA] and graduate [MFA and Ph.D.]
Specific technical requirements of post:
The Fine Arts Workshop Technician will have a solid understanding of Woodworking techniques & metal work and construction of various and sometimes complex product design and art installations. Familiar with safe operation and maintenance of workshop equipment and tools.
The Fine Arts Workshop Technician will be competent at planning, setting up, and installations of Art & Design Degree exhibition shows in conjunction with Course Leaders and operations staff.
The Fine Arts Workshop Technician will be competent at designing and setting up studio spaces.
Key Responsibilities and capabilities:
Plan and oversee all aspects of the day to day running of the Fine Arts Workshop and workshop area, giving instruction and supervision to students (undergraduate, post graduate) and academic staff and to ensure that work operations are carried out in a safe manner and in a safe working environment and that Health and Safety procedures are adhered to by all workshop users. The Fine Arts Workshop Technician will be required to anticipate demand within work area.
Provide health and safety training on equipment and tools of all staff, students and visitors within the workshop area, including keeping detailed records of training. Organize the maintenance and upkeep of all mechanical equipment, including cleaning, and carrying out minor repairs, organize servicing and larger repairs of equipment.
Administrative duties will include ensuring the workshop is well run, with efficient resource for the subject areas such as pricing and ordering of equipment, tools, materials and consumables, record keeping and timetabling and development of new facilities.
Health & Safety responsibilities:
Ensure all activity in the workshop takes place as safely as possible and in compliance with university and State policy: development and delivery of workshop Health & Safety induction; training of all staff and student workshop users; maintain Individual training records; keep up-to-date with developments in Health & Safety legislation; act as a local area Health & Safety Advisor , manage risk assessments, maintain accident/incident records; act as Fire Steward and First Aider; advise on manual handling.
Ad hoc duties requested by the line manager, and the Department Chair, allowing the workshop and supported academic programs to run as smoothly as possible.
Problem Solving:
The role requires that the Fine Arts Workshop Technician will use their knowledge and experience and initiative to resolve routine and sometimes complex non-standard technical queries and problems raised by students, faculty and other technical team colleagues.
Using verbal, drawn or written means, evaluate and find solutions to malfunctions in the workshop equipment, repair broken or faulty equipment where possible.
Identify maintenance requests to be contracted out.
Decision Making:
The technician will mainly work without direct supervision and determine the priority of their own work.
The role will involve making decisions on a variety of both complex and routine issues relating to their work.
The technician will take support from line manager when necessary, offer help and advice to students on the choice of materials, techniques and equipment used to complete their project.
Assessing safety in the workshop, including preparation of risk assessments.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience Needed for the Job
Essential:
Advanced degree or knowledge in more than one relevant discipline or typically 3 years’ experience in a workshop environment.
Knowledge of woodworking, metalworking, casting, design, and fabrication techniques.
Knowledge of Ceramic glazes (Keep mixed and usable).
Knowledge of Ceramic kilns.
IT skills, CAD & 3D modelling techniques and related software.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills, possessing an inquisitive mind, with an ability to solve problems in a practical and efficient manner.
Expected to be highly efficient and have a good rapport with students and faculty.
Well-developed communication skills to enable the identification and understanding of students and faculty requirements.
Clear understanding of health and safety law and Implications of non-compliance on others.
Desirable:
Accredited Health & Safety certificates.
Experienced in the use of applicable 3D software or experience of similar software packages. Knowledge of laser cutting and 3D printing,

The position will work with the faculty of the Music Department Jazz Voice Program, and faculty in the other departmental concentrations, to continue to build on the Program's many strengths for the training of aesthetic cultural activists in the broad fields of Music.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Teach solo jazz voice to undergraduate majors; teach courses in beginning, intermediate or advanced vocal improvisation; direct vocal jazz ensemble(s), teach vocal arranging (for solo voice w/rhythm, as well as vocal ensemble), advise undergraduate jazz voice majors; assist with recruitment activities and auditions. Fulfilling faculty expectations associated with traditional university service appointments encouraged by volunteer status.

This is a full-time, tenured appointment beginning for academic year (AY) 2026-27. The position will work with the faculty of the Musical Theatre Program, and faculty in the other five departmental concentrations, to continue to build on the Program's many strengths for the training of aesthetic cultural activists in the broad fields of Theatre Arts.

The vision for the Department of Theatre Arts is to become a hub for the Black dramatic arts intelligence, a haven for its legacy and a pre-eminent training ground for its aesthetic and cultural activism.
We seek an artist/educator with equal experience in musical theatre and incorporating inclusive and forward moving andragogies in our classrooms.
The Musical Theatre area of concentration produces professional, artist/scholars who have the ability to excel on any theatrical stage, including, but not limited to, Broadway, Off-Broadway, touring, regional, international, cabaret and concert, both major and minor, commercial and not-for-profit. The program asserts that beginning with intense self-discovery and exploration, matched with dedicated focus on foundational technique, followed by an unyielding diligence towards artistic and scholarly excellence, produces creative, high-quality artists. The program works to facilitate not just the creation of performers who are highly skilled technicians of singing, dancing and acting but passionate artists with a deep respect for the craft who use musical theatre to communicate with audiences about our shared human condition.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in both performance and musical theatre performance/directing, who can teach a range of performance and musical theatre courses, and possess who possesses a passion for working collaboratively. This person will direct the Musical Theatre program and will continue to strengthen the major. Significant professional and teaching experience and a commitment to working in theatre, music, and dance are essential.
Duties primarily include:
Administrative duties – the capacity to serve as Area Coordinator responsible for area: curriculum assessment and development; recommend course scheduling; academic advisement; student records maintenance; on-going academic performance assessment for the concentration; student academic advisement; season planning recommendations, including master-class recommendations; helping students with problems associated with registration, classes, rehearsals and performances; acting as spokesperson for the area; coordinating faculty around juries and other area-wide student assessments; consulting with faculty members about their ideas and suggesting solutions for area issues; student recruitment; student matriculation; area faculty management; and area faculty recruitment recommendations.
Instructional duties – teaching courses in the musical theatre and other relevant areas within the Department of Theatre Arts with a minimum/maximum workload of 15/18 credit hours per academic year.
Research Scholarship and Creative duties – pursuing professional growth through funded research, scholarly writing, advanced study and/or original creative production on-campus appropriate to the discipline of musical theatre.
Departmental, College and University Service duties – serving on departmental, college and university wide committees for the governance of departmental, college and university shared governance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- MFA in Musical Theatre or related discipline completed by date of employment
- At least 6 years teaching experience and administrative leadership at the university/college level
- Experience as a professional musical theatre performer, director and/or choreographer contracted to work for major national - or International – theatre companies, on the professional concert stage, and/or for Broadway theatre productions

Associate Professor of Dance (Tenured)
The Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts at Howard University (www.finearts.howard.edu) invites applications for a full-time, tenured appointment at the rank of Associate Professor of Dance, with an anticipated start date at the beginning of the 2026–2027 academic year.
We seek a scholar–practitioner specializing in Critical Dance Studies, with a particular focus on the historical, anthropological, and/or ethnographic study of African diasporic dance cultures and traditions. The ideal candidate’s research and pedagogy will also engage embodied practice and may include additional expertise in areas such as dance wellness (physical therapy and dance therapy), historical dance practices, or other related fields.
Candidates should demonstrate the ability to teach the Dance Program’s core Dance History curriculum, while also offering courses that reflect their areas of specialization. A secondary capacity to teach in one or more of the following areas is highly desirable: dance technique, creative process, pedagogy, somatics, dance science, wellness, dance and technology, or theatre curation.
We are especially interested in candidates whose teaching and scholarship engage Afro-diasporic aesthetics alongside popular, vernacular, and concert dance forms including contemporary dance, West African dance, ballet, and Hip-Hop, and whose approaches are informed by Black queer and feminist theoretical frameworks, critical race theory, culturally responsive pedagogy, and social justice practices.
The successful candidate will hold a terminal degree MFA or Ph.D. in Dance or a related field and demonstrate a record of accomplishment as a performing artist, scholar, and dance pedagogue.

The successful candidate is expected to be able to:

- Recruit and Contribute to the continued development and success of the program through leadership in teaching and service.

Duties:
The instructional duties for this role include a maximum teaching load of 15–18 credit hours per academic year. Responsibilities encompass teaching undergraduate courses within the Dance Program curriculum; directing senior undergraduate dance concerts; mentoring and advising students; and contributing to departmental, college, and university service. This includes active participation on committees and engagement in shared governance at the departmental, college, and university levels.
In addition, the role carries expectations for research, scholarship, and creative activity. This may include pursuing funded research, producing scholarly writing, engaging in advanced study, and/or presenting original creative work aligned with the discipline of dance.

- With graduate teaching experience and professional industry experience are highly desirable, such as experience with teaching using a learning management system for course content, assignments, grading, attendance, and student communication.
- With a demonstrated secondary specialization in teaching technique, creative process, pedagogy, somatics, dance science, dance and technology, or curation.
- Who possess a strong track record as a choreographer and movement researcher/practitioner.
- With demonstrated administrative, artistic mentoring, and producing experience.

The position will work with the faculty of the Theatre Technology program, and faculty in the other four departmental concentrations, to continue to establish the Theatre Technology area of concentration and to build on the program's strengths for training of “aesthetic cultural activists.”

We seek an artist/educator with equal experience in production and incorporating inclusive and forward moving andragogies in our classrooms.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate success in teaching and guiding theatre students, proficiency in the arts and crafts of theatrical design (preferably Costume, Lighting, Scenic), relevant professional work in the field, scholarly contributions to the discipline, and a commitment to the missions, visions and values of Howard University, the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts and the Department of Theatre Arts. The ideal candidate will also have demonstrable interdisciplinary experience within academia, multi-hyphenate capacities within the fields of theatre arts, and a passion for bringing current, evolving styles, techniques, technologies, trends, scholarship and pedagogy of theatre design, technology and stage management.
Duties primarily include:
Administrative duties – the capacity to serve as Area Coordinator responsible for area:
- curriculum assessment and development;
- recommend course scheduling;
- student records maintenance;
- on-going academic performance assessment for the concentration;
- student academic advisement;
- season planning recommendations, including master-class recommendations;
- helping students with problems associated with registration, classes, rehearsals and performances;
- acting as spokesperson for the area;
- coordinating faculty with respect to student benchmark adjudications and other area-wide student assessments;
- creating platforms for professional opportunities for students;
- consulting with faculty members about their ideas and suggesting solutions for area issues;
- student recruitment;
- area faculty management and workload assignment recommendations;
- and area faculty recruitment recommendations
Instructional duties – teaching courses in theatre technology and other relevant areas within the Department of Theatre Arts with a minimum/maximum workload of 2/3 courses per academic semester.
Research Scholarship and Creative duties – pursuing professional growth through funded research, scholarly writing, advanced study and/or original creative production on-campus appropriate to the discipline of theatre technology.
Departmental, College and University Service duties – serving on departmental, college and university wide committees for the governance of departmental, college and university shared governance.
Production duties – serve as Designer and/or mentor for departmental productions;

- supervise the technical elements of production
- supervise the load-in and out of materials and equipment into the theatres
- oversee the work of the production crews during on-stage rehearsals and performances

Preferred Qualifications:
- MFA in Theatre Design (Costume, Lighting, Scenic) or related discipline completed by date of employment

- Substantial experience as a professional theatre practitioner contracted to work for major national - or International – theatre companies, on the professional concert stage, and/or for Broadway theatre productions

Under the SEIU full-time Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement unit, applicants will be invited to apply internally for the “Temporary” or “Probationary Career Status-Track” Lecturer position. The terms and qualifications are as follows:
TEMPORARY: Requires the candidate to serve a 1-year or 1-semester term, for which there is a 7-year time limit. The lecturer will instruct 4/4 courseload (but at least 12 credits/semester), advising students at the collegiate level. There is no Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) requirement.
PROBATIONARY CAREER STATUS-TRACK: Requires the candidate to serve a 3-year term, for which there is a probationary period of 6 years (2 terms) before applying for the next ranking “Senior Lecturer” position. The lecturer will instruct 12 credits per semester, advising students at the collegiate level. Submission of a written statement of teaching philosophy and a) at least one peer reviewed publication engaging in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) appropriate to the Lecturer’s discipline or b) a creative work appropriate to the discipline, all as determined by Tenured faculty. This does not include a master’s thesis or dissertation. Terminal degree is required for this track.
