Department of Art

Assistant Professor of Graphic Design (Tenure-Track)

The Department of Art in the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts at Howard University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Graphic Design. This is a full-time, tenure-track appointment beginning for academic year (AY) 2026-27. We seek outstanding applicants with a demonstrated track record of excellence in creative practice, research and teaching. Candidates should have a thorough understanding of the implications of design practice in relation to broader social, cultural, economic, scientific, and technological issues; have the ability to inspire students and to help them develop skills necessary for the translation of meaningful ideas into innovative and creative solutions for real-world problems. Candidates should also be able to assist with the development and support of the program's relationships with external partners. 

The Department of Art invites applicants with expertise in one or more of the following design areas: print layout, typography, web design, multimedia, motion graphics, illustration, digital photography, interactive/computational media design, augmented/virtual/mixed reality design, interaction design, data visualization, and/or interactive media arts. Candidates should understand emerging media and collaborate with faculty across disciplines. An interest in interdisciplinary and intermedia practice is preferred, as is experience and commitment to working with diverse student populations in a culturally rich work and educational environment.

The Department of Art currently consists of faculty members teaching, practicing, and conducting research in Graphic and Information Design, Fashion Design, Electronic Studio, Interior Design, Art History, Photography, Painting, and Ceramics. The Department offers both BFA and MFA degrees. It is the goal of the department that graduates in graphic design become innovative artists who are technically and conceptually prepared for a lifelong career in the field.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MFA or other terminal degree required in design by the start date of the appointment
  • At least two years of higher education level teaching preferred;
  • Professional experience commensurate with the rank of assistant professor: demonstrate a national or international record of excellence in creative practice
  • Evidence of innovative research, substantive scholarship, and effective teaching
  • Familiarity with the commercial and business aspects of the field
  • Candidates will have experience developing new courses that engage with contemporary practices, techniques, and issues in the field of Graphic Design.
  • Candidates will have a well-developed research practice that informs and advances current trends in the field through creative production, experimentation, collaboration, exhibition and publication.
  • Candidates will possess excellent technical skills and an in-depth knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite, especially Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, and InDesign. Candidates will also be well-versed with current web and app design practices, CMS, and experience working in multiple computer platforms and system configurations.
  • Candidates will demonstrate effective communication skills: be able to communicate with students from diverse backgrounds; and demonstrate an eagerness to teach in, and advance, the graphic design concentration.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate students in various areas of graphic design: including digital media arts, using traditional and digital means.
  • Mentor students within the context of an interdisciplinary art and design program.
  • Actively participate in undergraduate and graduate level curriculum development.
  • Maintain an outstanding record of teaching, service, and art and design production and research practices.
  • Share responsibility for all aspects of the graphic design program and serve on committees at the department, school, college, and university level.
  • Facilitate student involvement in trade and professional bodies: by leading field trips, as well as advising local design clubs on campus.
  • Work with students to produce portfolios of work that reflects a high degree of knowledge in the field.

The Department of Art at Howard University (finearts.howard.edu) is seeking application for a Visiting Professor of Africana Visual & Material Culture, beginning Fall 2026. This position will work with Art History/Visual Culture faculty, and faculty in the other seven departmental concentrations, to offer new courses toward the development of a new visual and material culture area of study. We are seeking scholars to advance the Department of Art’s commitment to training of “aesthetic cultural leaders and activists”.

As a historically Black, private university dedicated to educating cultural leaders equipped to drive change and equity in the global art economy, the Department of Art is devoted to the perpetual growth and development of the African Diasporic experience through the study and practice of visual and material culture of the African Diaspora. 

The Department of Art meets the educational needs of students by offering exemplar instruction in the practice, history, and criticism of the visual arts and design. The Department of Art seeks to maintain an atmosphere conducive to developing skilled and knowledgeable graduates who are prepared for the twenty-first century to compete for professional positions and engage in entrepreneurial endeavors as artists, designers, fashion merchandisers, interior designers, museum administrators and cultural scholars. The Department recognizes its unique advantage and responsibility to reflect, affirm, and perpetuate the visual expression of the African American and African Diaspora experience.

We seek a scholar in the fields of visual culture studies, material culture studies, or art history. We also welcome interdisciplinary art scholars who have explored their disciplines in museological practice.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate success in teaching and guiding art students toward proficiency in critically analyzing Africana visual and material culture as well as exposure to relevant professions in the field, scholarly contributions to the discipline, and a commitment to the missions, visions and values of Howard University, the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts and the Department of Art. The ideal candidate will also have demonstrable interdisciplinary experience within academia and a passion for current analytical and pedagogical trends.

Duties primarily include:

Instructional duties – teaching courses in visual culture, material culture, art criticism, or art history with a minimum/maximum workload of 2/3 courses per academic semester. 

Research Scholarship and Creative duties – pursuing professional growth through funded research, scholarly writing, curatorial practice appropriate to the discipline of visual culture studies, material culture studies or art history.

Departmental, College and University Service duties – serving on departmental, college committees focused on the development of the new visual and material culture area of studies.

Preferred Qualifications:  

PhD in visual culture studies or art history or related discipline completed by date of employment

At least 5 years teaching experience

Substantial experience as art history or visual culture scholar, with active publication or curatorial record

Jazz Voice program. This is a part-time, temporary appointment beginning for academic year (AY) 2025-26 - January 2026. The position will work with the faculty of the Music Department Jazz Voice Program, and faculty in the other departmental concentrations, to continue to build on the Program's many strengths for the training of aesthetic cultural activists in the broad fields of Music.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Teach solo jazz voice to undergraduate majors; teach courses in beginning, intermediate or advanced vocal improvisation; direct vocal jazz ensemble(s), teach vocal arranging (for solo voice w/rhythm, as well as vocal ensemble), advise undergraduate jazz voice majors; assist with recruitment activities and auditions. Fulfilling faculty expectations associated with traditional university service appointments encouraged by volunteer status.

QUALIFICATIONS: Master of Music; artist-level performance in jazz voice including vocal improvisation (scat singing); intermediate piano or keyboard skills; advanced knowledge of vocal pedagogy; demonstrated success in teaching jazz courses at the college or secondary level and evidence of effective oral and written communication skills.

Chairperson, Professor of Theatre Arts (Tenured)

The Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts at Howard University is excited to announce an opportunity for a visionary, collaborative, and accomplished leader to serve as Chair of the Department of Theatre Arts. The Chair serves as a mentor to faculty colleagues, collaborates with administrative leaders and staff members, and leads faculty in important processes that shape curriculum and inspire vision for theatre arts throughout the African Diaspora.  The Chair strives to effectively articulate both the department and the College’s missions to internal and external constituencies and establishes an inclusive and welcoming academic environment that encourages engagement, participation, collegiality, and respect. The chair supervises all employees in the department and administers yearly performance evaluations, recommends faculty candidates for vacant positions, and makes recommendations regarding faculty reappointment, tenure, and promotion. The position is a 12-month appointment reporting to the Dean of the college. The Chair is expected to serve on elected and appointed committees and to accept other duties as assigned by the Dean. 

With 44 full and part-time faculty, the Department of Theatre Arts serves over 150 students and offers BFA degrees in acting, dance, musical theatre, theatre arts administration, and theatre technology, and minors in theatre arts. Through research, experimentation, production, performance, and the education of emerging professionals, our faculty nurture holistic, multi-hyphenate, collaborative, interdisciplinary artists and scholars prepared to pioneer and lead their fields on the national and global stage. As the only College of Fine Arts in a historically Black, private university, our faculty are committed to educating leaders capable of employing the arts to drive change and solve world problems. Leadership and Administrative Expectations
The Department Chair holds responsibilities invested in ensuring the success of the department’s faculty, staff, and students. This broad range of responsibilities includes (but is not limited to):
• Articulating a direction and goals for the department that align with college and university-level initiatives.
• Visioning and participating in cooperative collaboration efforts between CAB CoFA departments and across other colleges, schools, and programs at Howard University. 
• Managing and optimizing department budget and resources (facilities, faculty, etc.).
• Developing partnerships with local, national, and international organizations, institutions, and industry stakeholders to enhance the department's and the college’s reputation and provide opportunities for students and faculty.
• Coordinating the activities of curriculum development and discipline-specific accreditation.
• Overseeing all faculty mentoring, service assignments, promotion and tenure reviews, work plans, workloads, hiring activities, and annual reviews.
• Managing day-to-day student affairs, including the planning of community-engaged activities and events.
• Collaborate with the recruitment and admissions team to support student recruitment, admission, and retention activities (e.g., new student orientation, department onboarding) and in consultation with the academic advisor.
• Coordinating interactions with alumni, donors, and visiting artists/scholars.
• Teaching in the Chair’s area of expertise will be expected, providing a forum for direct interaction with students in creative/academic contexts and affording opportunities to model scholarship within the department. It is expected that the Chair will have a 1/1 teaching load.

Qualifications
• MFA or PhD in one of the areas represented in the Department of Theatre Arts
• Knowledge of the higher educational landscape, research, and professional practices in performing arts.
• A minimum of five years of University-level teaching experience beyond the TA and/or adjunct level.
• Experience in academic administration or demonstrated leadership in institutional service or service to the field.
• A well-established research agenda with evidence of a significant performance record and/or scholarly record, external funding, and contributing to scholarship or creative practice that enhances and extends college/department expertise.
• Effective collaborative and communication skills are essential.
• The Chair will have demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students.

We seek an artist/educator with equal experience in musical theatre and incorporating inclusive and forward moving andragogies in our classrooms.

The Musical Theatre area of concentration produces professional, artist/scholars who have the ability to excel on any theatrical stage, including, but not limited to, Broadway, Off-Broadway, touring, regional, international, cabaret and concert, both major and minor, commercial and not-for-profit. The program asserts that beginning with intense self-discovery and exploration, matched with dedicated focus on foundational technique, followed by an unyielding diligence towards artistic and scholarly excellence, produces creative, high-quality artists. The program works to facilitate not just the creation of performers who are highly skilled technicians of singing, dancing and acting but passionate artists with a deep respect for the craft who use musical theatre to communicate with audiences about our shared human condition.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in both performance and musical theatre performance/directing, who can teach a range of performance and musical theatre courses, and possess who possesses a passion for working collaboratively. This person will direct the Musical Theatre program and will continue to strengthen the major. Significant professional and teaching experience and a commitment to working in theatre, music, and dance are essential.

Associate Professor of Dance (Tenured)

We seek a scholar–practitioner specializing in Critical Dance Studies, with a particular focus on the historical, anthropological, and/or ethnographic study of African diasporic dance cultures and traditions. The ideal candidate’s research and pedagogy will also engage embodied practice and may include additional expertise in areas such as dance wellness (physical therapy and dance therapy), historical dance practices, or other related fields.

Candidates should demonstrate the ability to teach the Dance Program’s core Dance History curriculum, while also offering courses that reflect their areas of specialization. A secondary capacity to teach in one or more of the following areas is highly desirable: dance technique, creative process, pedagogy, somatics, dance science, wellness, dance and technology, or theatre curation.

We are especially interested in candidates whose teaching and scholarship engage Afro-diasporic aesthetics alongside popular, vernacular, and concert dance forms including contemporary dance, West African dance, ballet, and Hip-Hop, and whose approaches are informed by Black queer and feminist theoretical frameworks, critical race theory, culturally responsive pedagogy, and social justice practices.

Position Summary:
The Department of Theatre Arts in the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track Lecturer (Temporary) in Musical Theatre. This position is designed for a dynamic educator and artist with a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and student mentorship. The successful candidate will contribute to a collaborative, interdisciplinary program and demonstrate the ability to teach across musical theatre performance, music theory, and vocal instruction. The position will work with the faculty of the Musical Theatre program, and faculty in the other four departmental concentrations, to continue to build on the program's strengths for training of “aesthetic cultural activists.” Expected start date is the beginning of academic year (AY) 2026-27.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Teach a range of undergraduate courses in musical theatre, including but not limited to:
    • Music Theory for Musical Theatre
    • Ear Training/Sight Singing 
    • Applied Voice for Musical Theatre (private and/or group instruction)
    • Musical Theatre Technique (acting through song, repertoire, audition techniques, and devised work)
  • Direct or music direct departmental productions as needed

  • Proficiency in music theory (notation, rhythm, time signatures, key signatures, scales, intervals, triads/7th chords, harmony, functional harmony (I, IV, V chords), cadence recognition, and inversions)
  • Proficiency in aural skills and transcription (aurally identify intervals (up to an octave), melodic patterns, and harmonic progressions. Taking melodic and rhythmic dictation)
  • Proficiency in sight-singing
  • Strong pedagogical techniques in vocal skills, rhythmic mastery, and methodologies
  • Professional experience in musical theatre performance and/or production
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a diverse academic environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree (MFA, DMA, or PhD) in a relevant discipline
  • Experience directing or music directing stage productions
  • Experience in technology application such using digital tools for creating sight-singing exercises and ear training.

Primary Responsibilities

Teaching

  • Teach undergraduate courses in costume design, costume construction, and/or related areas based on departmental needs.
  • Develop syllabi, assignments, and assessments aligned with program learning outcomes.
  • Mentor and advise students in costume design for departmental productions.
  • Support inclusive, student-centered, and practice-based learning environments.

Costume Shop Management

  • Oversee the operation, organization, and maintenance of the costume shop.
  • Supervise and train student workers and/or practicum students.

  • Manage budgets related to costume construction, rentals, and supplies in coordination with production staff.

Production Support

The Department of Theatre Arts seeks a dynamic, student-centered artist-educator with strong expertise in acting pedagogy and professional practice for a part-time adjunct position in Musical Theatre Acting.   • Strong pedagogical techniques in diverse acting techniques adapted for musical theatre, focusing on character analysis, objective, and obstacle within a singing context.
  • Evidence of effective teaching, coaching, or training experience 
  • Ability to collaborate across disciplines, including voice and dance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree (MFA, DMA, or PhD) in a relevant discipline
  • Active engagement in the professional theatre industry (Broadway, regional theatre, touring productions, film/TV)

The Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts at Howard University (www.finearts.howard.edu) invites applications for a part-time Adjunct Lecturer, temporary faculty position in the nationally renowned Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) Theatre Arts program for the 2026–2027 academic year (August 2026 through May 2027), with the possibility of reappointment. We seek a dynamic and collaborative theatre generalist with the ability to teach foundational undergraduate theatre courses while supporting the department’s commitment to excellence in teaching, mentorship, and creative practice.

The successful candidate will demonstrate broad knowledge of theatre history, performance, analysis, and dramatic literature, with the flexibility to also teach in the acting area. 

The vision for the Department of Theatre Arts is to become a hub for the Black dramatic arts intelligence, a haven for its legacy and a pre-eminent training ground for its aesthetic and cultural activism.  As a historically Black, private university committed to educating leaders capable of driving change and solving world problems, the Department of Theatre Arts is dedicated to the continued growth and development of the African Diasporic experience through the study and practice of the theatre arts. Primary Teaching Responsibilities May Include:

  • Introduction to Theatre
  • Play Analysis
  • Dramaturgy
  • Play Reading and Dramatic Literature
  • Beginning and Intermediate Acting
  • Additional foundational or survey courses based on departmental needs and candidate expertise

Responsibilities:

  • Teach assigned undergraduate courses in accordance with departmental learning outcomes
  • Develop and maintain course syllabi, assignments, and assessments
  • Foster an inclusive, engaging, and student-centered classroom environment
  • Hold office hours and provide timely communication and feedback to students
  • Participate in departmental meetings and activities as appropriate
  • Submit grades and other required documentation in a timely manner

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree (MFA, DMA, or PhD) in a relevant discipline
  • Experience in teaching theatre arts and collaborating with theatre/dance departments.
  • Evidence of inclusive teaching practices and commitment to student success
  • Experience with participating in department meetings, committee work, and departmental service.

Duties:

The successful applicant will teach up to 8 credit hours per semester load with an initial contract of 1-year. Responsibilities will include teaching courses at the undergraduate level in the department’s program curricula; mentoring undergraduate students; participating in departmental activities, and college and university administrative service.
