This panel, hosted by Howard University’s Department of Art, promises to be a timely and stimulating conversation that straddles the cross-section between visual communication, health and wellness with panelists who bring to the table a diverse set of experiences and expertise from the creative and health and wellness arenas.

  • Jennifer White-Johnson, Assistant Professor of Visual Communication at Bowie State University, MD, who uses graphic design and photography to advocate for neurodiverse voices, particularly those on the autism spectrum
  • Chuck Husak, owner at August, Lang & Husak advertising agency in Chevy Chase, MD who works with clients to develop advertising meant to improve the human condition. AL&H’s ad portfolio has addressed safer cars, child obesity, eye care, bone strength, and underage drinking.
  • Dr. Akbar Khan, a Muslim-American pediatrician who has practiced medicine within three diverse and underserved communities in the Caribbean, in New York city, and in rural Missouri where patients are resource-challenged. He embraces the challenge of exploring solutions to serve these communities that go beyond medical knowledge and acknowledges the role that design and advertising play in improving delivery of quality healthcare.
  • Shanell Kitt, a licensed social worker and graduate MFA student at Howard University whose creative work focuses on promoting mental wellness in underserved communities, most recently through cultural analysis of the design and composition of memorial altars erected in remembrance of loved ones.
