Transnational African American and Afro Mexican Aesthesis: Elizabeth Catlett, Olga Manzano Vega, Baltazar Castellano Melo, and Sergio Sánchez Santamarina

On Wednesday, October 5, 2022 at 4 p.m., the Howard University Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts, Gallery of Art will host an international symposium Transnational African American and Afro Mexican Aesthesis: Elizabeth Catlett, Olga Manzano Vega, Baltazar Castellano Melo, and Sergio Sánchez Santamaría. Through the symposium the Gallery of Art will present an artistic forum connecting the artistic aesthetic of Howard University alumna Elizabeth Catlett and the African influenced social-cultural experiences in Mexico through contemporary artists Miguel Rojas-Sotelo, Olga Manzano Vega, and Baltazar Castellano Melo. As the Gallery embarks on a new cultural and artistic vision connecting the experiences of

African descendants in the Diaspora—the Americas, Europe, and Asia—the symposium will be the first of a series on art of the Diaspora. The scheduled event will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Black Box Theater located in the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts, Lulu Vere Childers Building.

The symposium will be moderated by Kathryn Coney-Ali (Howard University, DC), and features the following presentations from the panelists:

• Elizabeth Catlett: The Transnational Afro Méxican Landscape by Raul Moarquech Ferrera-Balanquet (Howard University, DC);

• Graphic in Transit: The Prints of Sergio Sanchez Santamarina by Miguel Rojas-Sotelo (Duke University, Durham, NC);

• Afro Méxican Ancestral Textile Patterns by Olga Manzano Vega (México City, México);

• Ancestral Afro Méxican Visual Imaginary in Motion by Baltazar Castellano Melo (Costa Chica, Guerrero, México);

• Blackness As A Portal: Global Belonging by Vanessa Lopez (Maryland Art Institute).
