Baton Twirling Instructor
Howard University “Showtime” Marching Band

Irene Johnson is a passionate baton twirling instructor who dedicates her time to empowering and encouraging Black and Brown children through the sport of baton twirling. With a deep love for both the art and athleticism of the discipline, Irene has made it her mission to introduce and teach baton twirling to young people who may not typically have access to the sport. She believes that every child, regardless of background, should have the opportunity to explore their talents and develop self-confidence.

She grew up in Ohio and was a competitive baton twirler and amassed numerous trophies and titles throughout her career. She attended the University of Akron where she was captain of the majorette line with their marching band for 2 years. After moving to the DMV she started her own twirling team within the Dunbar Alexandria Boy’s and Girl’s Club in Alexandria, VA. Her team competed and performed across the United States. Some notable performances include at the White House Christmas Tree Lighting, a Cleveland Cavaliers halftime game and attending the first AAU Jr. Olympic Games when baton twirling was added to the games.

Irene’s teaching philosophy emphasizes discipline, perseverance, and creative expression while promoting inclusivity. Her commitment to fostering diversity within the baton twirling community has helped create a safe, supportive space for young athletes to thrive. Through her dedication, Irene is not only teaching a sport but also inspiring the next generation of twirlers to believe in their potential, build lasting friendships, and celebrate their cultural identity.

This is her 3rd year of being the inaugural coach for the baton twirlers, the “Dazzlin’ Diamonds” with the Howard University “Showtime” Marching Band.
