Admissions

Academic: Admissions

All students are required to follow the general admission process as outlined by the Office of Admission to be considered for admission into Howard University. Prospective students are not automatically accepted by the Department of Theatre Arts once they indicate Theatre Arts as one of their major preferences. Only after a prospective student is conditionally admitted into Howard University by the Office of Admission, and the department has reviewed all pertinent admission information, will the department render a final admission decision (with any applicable conditions).

General Requirements (First Year)

Prospective undergraduate students interested in a Theatre Arts performance concentration (Acting, Dance, and Musical Theatre) must must submit a recorded audition and may be required to participate in a live audition as evidence of their ability to successfully pursue college-level work in their desired concentrations. The Common Application must be submitted by the posted deadline date, as well as all supporting documents (test scores, letters of recommendation, audition materials, Headshot/Resume, Design Portfolio, etc.). Non-performance majors (Theatre Arts Administration and Theatre Technology) will be invited to interview.

For more information on these admission plans, please visit the Office of Admission's webpage. If conditionally accepted into the University, students interested in performance programs of study (Acting, Musical Theatre, Dance) must prepare for auditions, and students interested in administration and technical areas (Theatre Arts Administration, Theatre Technology) will prepare for interviews. For more information on these requirements, please visit here.

General Requirements (Transfer)

In addition to satisfying the university's general transfer admission requirements, all transfer students must successfully complete an audition/interview in the area of concentration they are most interested in before they can be accepted into the Department of Theatre Arts.  This process must occur before arriving on campus.  At that time, level placement usually occurs, which will determine which courses will be accepted in the discipline. General education courses may also require that equivalences be verified by the appropriate department on campus.  All transfer students are advised that transferring into the Department of Theatre Arts does not excuse the taking of prescribed sequential courses necessary for successful completion of the area of concentration. Furthermore, transferring into the department may require additional time and resources to complete the chosen area of concentration.
